Case Study: Austrian Association for Emergency Medicine Elevates Prehospital Ultrasound Training with 123sonography
Digital meets hands-on: How 123sonography powers the pPOCUS curriculum
In collaboration with the Austrian Society for Disaster and Emergency Medicine (ÖNK) and the Vienna Ambulance Service, the new pPOCUS (prehospital Point-of-Care Ultrasound) program introduces a modern, four-phase training concept – ÖGUM, DEGUM, and SGUM (*) certified and with 123sonography’s CME-accredited online course at its core.
Designed to deliver both scientific depth and clinical practicality, the program ensures participants are thoroughly prepared before entering hands-on phases in real-life emergency settings.
The pPOCUS program is structured into four sequential phases: Phase 1 consists of a CME-accredited online course developed by 123sonography, providing a comprehensive theoretical foundation that includes ultrasound principles, relevant pathologies, and clinical case-based learning. Phase 2 involves simulator & hands-on training conducted on-site by the Vienna Ambulance Service, where participants apply their knowledge in realistic prehospital scenarios. In Phase 3, participants have to perform and document 50 ultrasound exams independently and receive feedback through supervision. Phase 4 concludes the program with a final knowledge and skills assessment, offering eligibility for Ă–GUM Level 1 & 2 certification.
“123sonography’s online knowledge ensures every participant enters hands-on training with a strong, standardized knowledge base – a key factor for quality and patient safety.”
The pPOCUS course was created because prehospital teams need more than just access to ultrasound – they need the skills to use it confidently when every second counts. The goal was to build a training program that’s evidence-based, practically focused, and immediately applicable in the field. This course empowers providers to make faster, better decisions – and ultimately save lives.
